COVID-19 Resources

COVID-19 Resources

There are many things that are uncertain at this time, and uncertainty can lead to a variety of emotions from fear to sadness to frustration. While we are experiencing this novel coronavirus, it is important to recognize our emotions and focus on things in our lives that we can control. Knowing we have some control and resources will help to ease our strong feelings. The internet is a vast source of information that can make finding the resources we want and need during this time overwhelming.

Below are compiled resources we feel are beneficial. Families can spend their time reading, talking, and exploring together, rather than searching through the overwhelming amounts of resources available. We hope these resources provide your family with some comfort during this uncertain time.

Perham Area Public Library

Perham Area Public Library

We’ve partnered with the Perham Area Public Library on creating some events, visuals, and resources on how to use the library. Although the library is supportive and available at all times for individuals of all abilities, they have designated sensory-friendly hours during their regular operating hours. These hours are geared towards those individuals that are especially hesitant to attend the library and would feel more comfortable with extra visuals and supports. During this sensory-friendly time, there is an understanding atmosphere along with visual and sensory supports. Staff members have been trained in autism and will be able to support individuals with sensory needs.

Sensory Kits

Check out one of the sensory kits to make time at the library more comfortable. They are available at all times, but must be returned upon leaving the library.

Library Social Story

Read through this Going to the Library social story to help your child understand what to expect from their visit.

Sensory Friendly Hours

Every Thursday from 10am – 12pm at the Perham Public Library

Using the Computer Social Story

Read through this social story to better understand the expectations of using the computer while at the library.

Going to a Movie

Going to a Movie

With our sensory-friendly movie coming up, we thought it would be helpful for families to read through a social story about going to a movie. Read through this as many times as you need to in order to prepare your child for a fun afternoon in the theater. Keep in mind that this event will be sensory-friendly, so we’ll have a few adaptions compared to a regular theater. The volume will be turned down and the lights will be a little brighter. Most importantly, there is a no “hush” policy. We don’t encourage talking, but we understand there may be questions throughout the film.

We hope this helps you and your family enjoy a movie outing together!

Empowering Goals: Looking Forward to a Bright Future

Empowering Goals: Looking Forward to a Bright Future

From Director Tiffany Tobkin

I recently heard at a conference that humans often overestimate what they can accomplish in one year and underestimate what they can accomplish in ten. After looking back on the last year, I noticed that Empowering Kids is an exception.

In one year we have gone from providing services to 12 individuals to currently providing services for 34 individuals (which grew to 42 individuals this past summer), provided services to individuals from 15 different communities, provided an after-school program, hosted a summer program with weekly outings, and spoke at 9 different community presentations.

All of these accomplishments were more than I thought we would accomplish in a year and I began to wonder why Empowering Kids was the exception. I realized we made this progress because Empowering Kids doesn’t just include the staff and support inside our walls. We are a collaboration of the Boys and Girls Club, K-12 school staff, social workers, medical professionals, dedicated and supportive parents, passionate board members, an inviting and supportive community, and our generous donors.

We are growing because this vast range of support comes together to provide outstanding services to our families. The services Empowering Kids provides has a profound impact on individuals and their families.

We had one family so dedicated to supporting their child’s growth through our services (and happy with the offerings in our community) that the family actually relocated to Perham and the parents obtained employment here. They sought out and aligned additional services for their child and now the child is thriving on many levels (language, understanding and following a visual schedule, engaging with peers, and positively connecting with family members at home).

If our progress in year one reflects what we can accomplish in ten years, Empowering Kids has a bright future. We have already surpassed my year-long expectations, and we are just beginning our mission of empowering children, families, and the community by providing support and resources to those with autism or social challenges. I am motivated daily to continue to surpass our expectations on this journey with the rest of the team here at Empowering Kids, our families, partnering organizations, professionals in the area, and our wonderfully impactful and irreplaceable community members and donors.

Empowering Emotions: Helping a Student Recognize Feelings in Others

Empowering Emotions: Helping a Student Recognize Feelings in Others

I want to start off by expressing my gratitude to Empowering Kids and those involved in the program. It has had a profound impact on our lives and continues to do so today.

Last year, I felt very hopeless as I struggled with my son’s high energy, lack of focus, and difficulty with emotional regulation. I found myself constantly researching and reaching out to others seeking answers as to how to help my son have a higher quality of life, rather than struggle on a daily basis. The HOTL preschool told me about Sensory Processing Disorder and Empowering Kids. This is when our world started to look bright again.

Sam started meeting with Tiffany on a weekly basis and absolutely loved it. It became the highlight of his week. I started noticing changes in him as he was more able to name what he was feeling, and we could talk about emotions. He participated in the summer program as well and got to know Chelsey, whom he just adores!

He now goes twice a week and it is honestly what he looks forward to the most each week. We talk about how he gets to “ride the black bus” and he excitedly talks about his friends that work there.

Sam has come so far since being involved with Empowering Kids. I am blown away at his emotional maturity at times and have been stopped in my tracks when he has asked me to pause when he sees me upset. He has gone from a child that blows up at the most minute obstacle, to calming down his frustrated mom by telling me, “It’s okay mom, you can get through this.” He has learned coping skills, how to better regulate his emotions, how to name his feelings, teamwork, and life skills, among many other wonderful things from the incredible friends that work at Empowering Kids. I can’t say enough great things about Christi, Tiffany, Chelsey, Heidi, Kieler, and CJ! They are amazing, compassionate, patient souls that are such a gift to the program.

I want to thank you for allowing us to be a part of Empowering Kids regardless of our financial status. I am a struggling single mom going to college full time, and your staff has made it clear to me that finances should never hinder my child from getting the services he needs to be successful.

We hosted our first ADHD Summit recently, and it was a huge hit with parents. The presenters were informative and interesting, while the booth spaces provided an opportunity for personal connection. It certainly won’t be our last! We already have plans in place for an Autism Summit coming soon.

For those that we unable to attend or those that want to see the visuals again, here are the presentations of each of our great presenters. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us!

Empowering Families: The Search is Over for One Empowered Family

Empowering Families: The Search is Over for One Empowered Family

Hello. My name is Kristen Paurus and I live in Sebeka, on a small farm, with my husband William and our two beautiful daughters age 12 and 9. It is because of our oldest daughter, who is on the autism spectrum, that I first became interested in Empowering Kids.

Since she was diagnosed 8 years ago we have been on a long and exhausting search for autism-specific services in our area. There were many, many phone calls to literally every provider in the state of Minnesota. Every single phone conversation ended in some form of, “We’re really sorry but we don’t provide services in your area.”

As a parent, when your child is diagnosed with something like autism, and you know there is help out there but you can’t provide it to them, it feels like a special kind of torture. If there is one thing that I struggled with the most surrounding my daughter’s diagnoses it was the feeling that I wasn’t doing enough for her. But I didn’t give up and eventually, one agency in the cities agreed to a trial long-distance run of ABA services. Those services were short-lived however due to staffing problems and other difficulties.

When I first heard of Empowering Kids, it was the first time in a long time I was actually hopeful that we might be able to get the extra help we needed to provide our daughter with the tools she needs to thrive. We have been receiving services since July and there have already been several times that I have sent a text message to my daughter’s teacher letting her know of something awesome she just did. There have been so many little victories my daughter has already had in these last few months that I am so excited to see what she will accomplish in the future. I know that these little victories will add up to huge strides and it gives me so much hope.

Empowering Kids is providing such a great service to our local communities and I cannot wait to see the impact they have on not only my daughter’s life but the lives of all the other amazing children that walk through their doors. Thank you Empowering Kids, for not only providing this much-needed service to our local communities but for providing exceptional service. My daughter loves her lessons, her teacher, and all the extra events you put on. After 8 long years, the search is finally over.
